Terra Transport was a wholly owned subsidiary of Canadian National Railway created in 1979 to operate CN's freight railway, bus and trucking services on the island of Newfoundland. It inherited the former Newfoundland Railway, once the longest 3 ft 6 in narrow-gauge railway in North America at roughly 1,000 kilometers, and attempted to modernize operations through intermodal containers and branch line closures. Following 1987 railway deregulation CN abandoned the operation, and Terra Transport's rail service ended in September 1988 after the federal government provided 800 million Canadian dollars for highway improvements.
