Port of Montreal Railway

The Port of Montreal Railway is a terminal railway in Montreal, Quebec, founded in 1907 and owned by the Montreal Port Authority, a government body, though it operates as a for profit railway in its own right. It runs about 100 kilometres of track linking port terminals to interchange points with Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific, moving containers by rail either to interchange yards or directly onto connecting trains; by 2015 it employed about 20 year round maintenance staff and handled roughly 60 to 80 trains a week across 168 switches. In 2017 the Canadian and Quebec governments joined the Port Authority in funding an 18.4 million dollar, six kilometre track expansion to keep pace with growing container volumes, at a time when rail already carried about 45 percent of the port's container traffic. As of 2012 its fleet included six locomotives, three EMD MP15AC units and three Railpower RP20BD units bought in 2010 to 2012, plus two rebuilt yard slugs.
