The Domingo Faustino Sarmiento Railway was one of six state-owned railway divisions created when Argentine President Juan Peron nationalized the country's British-owned rail network in 1948, succeeding the former Buenos Aires Western Railway. Named for the Argentine president and educator Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, it ran on 1,676 millimeter broad gauge track from Once station in Buenos Aires westward through Buenos Aires Province into La Pampa, San Luis and Mendoza provinces, carrying both metropolitan commuter traffic and long-distance passenger and freight services. Its passenger operations are today run under the Trenes Argentinos brand and its freight services by Ferroexpreso Pampeano.
