Căile Ferate Române was the state railway carrier of Romania, existing as a single entity from 1880, though the first railway on present day Romanian territory had opened in 1854. The company was dissolved on 1 October 1998 and split into several successor companies, including CFR Călători for passenger services, CFR Marfă for freight transport, Compania Națională de Căi Ferate CFR for network infrastructure, and Societatea Feroviară de Turism for scenic and tourist railways.
