Victorian Railways, abbreviated VR, was the state owned operator of most rail transport in the Australian state of Victoria from 1859 to 1983, headquartered at 67 Spencer Street, Melbourne. After rebranding as VicRail, the organization was split in 1983 between the State Transport Authority, which took over country rail and road services, and the Metropolitan Transit Authority, which took over suburban passenger operations. Its successors eventually became V/Line and, after further reorganization, Metro Trains Melbourne.
