KiwiRail Holdings Limited is a New Zealand state-owned enterprise and the country's largest rail transport operator, formed on 1 July 2008 and wholly owned by the New Zealand Crown. It owns and maintains the national rail network, operates freight and long-distance passenger trains under the Great Journeys New Zealand brand, and runs the Interislander ferry service across Cook Strait. The company is headquartered in Pipitea, Wellington, and manages roughly 3,898 kilometers of rail routes with 2,191 bridges and 148 tunnels.
