Transnet Freight Rail

Transnet Freight Rail is a South African rail transport company, formerly known as Spoornet, operating as a subsidiary of the state-controlled enterprise Transnet from headquarters at Inyanda House in Parktown, Johannesburg. Its lineage traces to 1910, when the South African Railways was formed by merging the Central South African Railways, Cape Government Railways and Natal Government Railways, and the company describes itself as the largest freight hauler in Africa, moving coal, iron ore, agricultural products, containers and other cargo through six business units while also operating the luxury Blue Train passenger service. In May 2026 its infrastructure manager signed operating agreements with eleven private-sector companies to open the national rail network to private operators.
