New Cape Central Railway

The New Cape Central Railway was registered in England in August 1892 to take over the bankrupt Cape Central Railway, a line in South Africa's Cape Colony that had opened from Worcester to Robertson in January 1887 and reached Ashton later that same year before its original owner failed in 1889. Under the new company, the line was extended south to Swellendam by April 1899 and finally to Mossel Bay in January 1906, growing the privately owned route to roughly 205 miles connecting to the Cape Government Railways at Worcester. The South African Railways bought the company outright in August 1925 for 1,100,000 pounds, absorbing it into the state network. In 2023 a tourist steam operation began running from Robertson station under the historic New Cape Central Railway name.
