Natal Government Railways

The Natal Government Railways was formed in January 1877 in the Colony of Natal, in what is now South Africa, and grew into an extensive network linking Durban with Pietermaritzburg, Newcastle and eventually the Witwatersrand goldfields, with its revenues contributing 40 to 50 percent of the colonial government income by the early 1900s. It ceased to exist in 1910 with the formation of the Union of South Africa, and on January 1, 1912 was merged with the Cape Government Railways and the Central South African Railways to form the South African Railways and Harbours.
