East African Railways and Harbours Corporation

The East African Railways and Harbours Corporation was a government-owned corporation that operated railways and harbours across East Africa from 1948 to 1977, formed by consolidating the Kenya and Uganda Railways and Harbours with the Tanganyika Railway under the East African High Commission. Beyond its rail network it ran inland shipping on Lake Victoria, Lake Kyoga, Lake Albert and the Victoria and Albert Niles, introducing powerful 59 class Garratt locomotives in 1955-56, launching the RMS Victoria in 1961 to double service speeds on Lake Victoria, and operating a Lake Victoria train ferry from 1965-66 using the MV Umoja and MV Uhuru, while extending the Uganda Railway to the Kasese copper mines in 1956 and to Arua in northern Uganda by 1964. Upon its 1977 dissolution the network split into three successor national railways: the Kenya Railways Corporation, the Tanzania Railways Corporation and the Uganda Railways Corporation.
