William Doxford & Sons

William Doxford & Sons Ltd was a British shipbuilding and marine engineering company founded in 1840 by William Doxford, based at Pallion on the River Wear in Sunderland from 1870 onward, where it built ships and manufactured marine diesel engines for over a century. After William Doxford died in 1882 his four sons took over management of the firm, which went through several ownership changes and name changes during the twentieth century. The company stopped building ships in 1989, having completed its final marine diesel engine in 1980.
