A. & J. Inglis was a Scottish shipbuilding and engineering firm based in the Partick area of Glasgow, founded by the brothers Anthony Inglis and John Inglis. Its Pointhouse Shipyard stood at the confluence of the rivers Clyde and Kelvin, and over a little more than a century the firm built over 500 ships. The range was wide: Clyde steamers, paddle steamers and small ocean liners, small warships in wartime, and a number of whalers after the Second World War. Wikipedia lists the paddle steamer Waverley, now the last seagoing paddle steamer in the world, among its famous ships. The article gives the founding year as 1862 in its opening lines, while its history section says the firm was formed in 1848 as an engineering works and acquired the Pointhouse yard in 1862. Harland and Wolff bought controlling shares in 1919 but the yard stayed independent, and the Pointhouse yard closed in 1962.
