London and Birmingham Railway

Industrials

The London and Birmingham Railway was an early British railway company created in 1833 and engineered by Robert Stephenson, opening its 112-mile line between Euston Station in London and Curzon Street Station in Birmingham in phases through 1837 and 1838, making it the first intercity line built into London. Capitalized at 5.5 million pounds, it operated independently for thirteen years before merging in July 1846 with the Grand Junction Railway and the Manchester and Birmingham Railway to form the London and North Western Railway; that successor company later became part of the London Midland and Scottish Railway and eventually the nationalised British Railways in 1948, and the original route now forms the southern section of the West Coast Main Line.
