The San Diego and Arizona Railway, nicknamed The Impossible Railroad for the engineering challenges of its construction, was chartered on December 14, 1906 by entrepreneur John D. Spreckels with backing from the Southern Pacific Railroad. Its 148-mile line connecting San Diego to El Centro through the difficult Carrizo Gorge, including 17 tunnels, took 13 years and 18 million dollars to build and opened to passengers on December 1, 1919. Financial difficulties forced Spreckels' heirs to sell the railway to Southern Pacific Transportation Company in 1932, which renamed it the San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway in 1933.
