Indian Railways is the state-owned national railway system of India, organized as a departmental undertaking of the Ministry of Railways of the Government of India. As of 2024 it operates the fourth largest national railway network by size, with a track length of about 135,207 kilometers, and by October 2025 roughly 99.1 percent of its broad-gauge network had been electrified. With more than 1.2 million employees, Indian Railways is the ninth largest employer in the world and the second largest employer within India.
