The Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij, founded on August 8, 1837, was the first railway company in the Netherlands, opening the country's oldest rail line between Amsterdam and Haarlem on September 20, 1839. Economic pressure following the First World War led it to merge in 1938 with the Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen to form Nederlandse Spoorwegen, the Dutch national railway.
