The Surrey Iron Railway was a horse drawn narrow gauge plateway that linked Wandsworth and Croydon via Mitcham, then in Surrey and now suburbs of south London. Established by an Act of Parliament in 1801, it opened in stages during 1802 and 1803 as a toll railway on which independent carriers used horse traction to move coal, building materials, lime, manure, corn and seed. The first stretch to Croydon opened on 26 July 1803, with a branch running from Mitcham to Hackbridge.
