Croatian Railways, known in Croatian as Hrvatske zeljeznice, was the national railway company of Croatia from 1990 to 2006, headquartered in Zagreb and wholly owned by the Republic of Croatia. It emerged from the Zagreb division of the former Yugoslav Railways following Croatian independence. In 2006 the company was restructured into five separate entities, including HZ Putnicki prijevoz for passenger transport, HZ Infrastruktura for infrastructure, and HZ Cargo for freight, in order to comply with European Union rules separating railway infrastructure management from transport operations.
