Rohilkund and Kumaon Railway

The Rohilkund and Kumaon Railway was a metre-gauge railway system in northern India covering a network of 592 miles, established in 1882 by Scottish engineer Alexander Izat, who served as its company director until 1904. Its main line from Bhojeepura near Bareilly to Kathgodam opened in 1884 and the network expanded over subsequent decades, reaching 256 miles by 1912; the company also worked the 296-mile Lucknow-Bareilly State Railway and operated the narrow-gauge Powayan Light Railway. The railway remained privately owned until 1943, when it was transferred to the Government of India and merged into the Oudh and Tirhut Railway, which became part of India's North Eastern Railway zone in 1952.
