Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij

N.V. Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij, abbreviated NIS, NISM or N.V. NISM, was a private railway company in charge of rail transport in Java, Dutch East Indies, established on 27 August 1863 and formally constituted 6 April 1875, with its registered office in The Hague and administrative headquarters in Semarang, Central Java, seated in the Lawang Sewu building designed by Cosman Citroen and completed in 1907. The company served Batavia, Buitenzorg, Central Java, East Java and the Vorstenlanden on both standard gauge and 1,067-millimeter narrow gauge track, competing chiefly with the state-owned Staatsspoorwegen; by 1936 it operated 602 kilometers of second-class network and 863 kilometers of narrow gauge line, and at the end of 1918 its fleet numbered 57 locomotives, 35 passenger cars, 136 baggage cars and 1,393 freight cars. It operated until 1942 and was succeeded after Indonesian independence in 1949 by Kereta Api Indonesia.
