Gio. Ansaldo and C., generally known as Ansaldo, was one of the oldest and most important engineering companies in Italy, existing for 140 years from 1853 to 1993. Based in Genoa, it was a major builder of ships and heavy machinery with an aircraft line, and its Sestri Ponente shipyard produced celebrated Italian ocean liners such as the Rex and the Michelangelo. The company was absorbed by Finmeccanica, now Leonardo, in 1993. This record covers the historic Genoese industrial firm, not the modern companies that carry the Ansaldo name.
