United Airlines is a major American airline headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, tracing its lineage to Varney Air Lines, one of the four small carriers that Boeing executive William Boeing consolidated into United Air Lines in 1931. It merged with Continental Airlines in 2010 to form what is now United Airlines Holdings, one of the largest airline groups in the world by fleet size, destinations served and revenue. A founding member of the Star Alliance in 1997, United operates major hub airports including Chicago O'Hare, Denver, Newark Liberty, Houston Intercontinental and San Francisco, and maintains one of the most extensive international route networks of any American carrier.
