Turkish Airlines is the flag carrier of Turkey, headquartered in Istanbul and tracing its founding to 1933 as the State Airlines Administration, a department of the Turkish Ministry of National Defense. Majority owned by the Turkish government through the Turkey Wealth Fund, the airline joined the Star Alliance in 2008 and operates its main hub from Istanbul Airport, one of the world's busiest and largest airports, opened in 2018 partly to accommodate the carrier's continued growth. Turkish Airlines is widely noted for flying scheduled service to more countries than any other airline in the world, a position built on Istanbul's geographic location bridging Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
