China Airlines is Taiwan's long-standing flag carrier, founded in 1959 with military origins connected to the Republic of China Air Force and headquartered near Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, its principal hub. Despite its name, the airline is based in Taipei and is entirely distinct from the mainland Chinese state carriers Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines, a naming overlap that reflects Taiwan's political history rather than any corporate connection. China Airlines operates an extensive international network from Taiwan to North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania, and it joined the SkyTeam alliance in 2011, becoming that alliance's member carrier representing Taiwan.
