RSC Energia, formally the S.P. Korolev Rocket and Space Corporation Energia, is a Russian aerospace manufacturer and spacecraft design bureau headquartered in Korolyov in the Moscow region. It is the principal contractor for the country's human spaceflight program and builds crewed and cargo spacecraft, space station modules and satellite platforms. The company traces its origin to 1946, when it was set up as the design bureau OKB-1 under the engineer Sergei Korolev, and it later carried a series of names before becoming RSC Energia in 1994. Its record includes the Soyuz spacecraft, the Progress cargo vehicle, the Energia heavy-lift launch system and modules for the Salyut and Mir stations and the International Space Station. In the 2020s it was reported to be under heavy financial and organizational strain, with warnings of possible bankruptcy.
