Airbus Defence and Space is the military and space systems division of Airbus. It was formed in 2014 during the restructuring of the European Aeronautic Defence and Space company, the predecessor of Airbus, and the subsidiary consists of the former Airbus Military, Astrium and Cassidian divisions of that company. Contributing 21 percent of the company's revenues in 2016, it is the second largest space company in the world. Plans have been announced to merge the space systems businesses of Airbus, Telespazio and Thales Alenia Space into a new joint venture owned by Airbus, Leonardo and Thales, which is expected to be operational in 2027 if regulators approve it.
