Abbott Laboratories is an American healthcare company headquartered in Abbott Park, Illinois, founded in 1888 by physician Wallace Calvin Abbott, initially producing standardized-dosage medicines. It grew into a diversified healthcare company spanning medical devices, diagnostics, nutrition products and generic pharmaceuticals, and in 2013 it spun off its research-based pharmaceutical business as the separately listed company AbbVie to focus on its remaining diversified healthcare businesses.
