Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Limited is an Indian pharmaceutical company headquartered in Mumbai, the largest pharmaceutical company in India and among the largest generic drug manufacturers in the world. It was founded in 1983 by Dilip Shanghvi, who began the company with a small range of psychiatric medicines before expanding into a broad generics and specialty pharmaceutical business. Sun Pharma grew substantially through domestic and international acquisitions, including its purchase of the larger Indian rival Ranbaxy Laboratories in 2015, and it now manufactures and sells generic and branded medicines across dermatology, ophthalmology, oncology and other specialty areas in more than one hundred countries, alongside a large United States generics business. The company operates numerous manufacturing plants across India and internationally.
