Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc. is a Japanese bank holding company headquartered in Tokyo, formed in 2002 through the merger of Sumitomo Bank and Sakura Bank, the latter itself the product of an earlier merger between Mitsui Bank and Taiyo Kobe Bank. Its main banking subsidiary, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, traces its roots to Sumitomo Bank, one of Japan's oldest financial institutions, with origins connected to the centuries-old Sumitomo family business empire. The group is one of Japan's three so-called megabanks, alongside Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, already live in this atlas, and Mizuho Financial Group, and it offers commercial banking, leasing, securities, and consumer finance services both domestically and internationally.
