Coterra Energy Inc. is an American oil and gas exploration and production company headquartered in Houston, Texas, formed in 2021 through the merger of two established independent producers: Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation, a major Marcellus Shale natural gas producer in northeastern Pennsylvania, and Cimarex Energy, an oil and gas producer concentrated in the Permian Basin and the Anadarko Basin of Oklahoma. The merger combined Cabot's low-cost Appalachian natural gas position with Cimarex's Permian and Anadarko oil and liquids-rich acreage under a single company, giving Coterra a diversified production base spanning both natural gas and oil-focused basins across the United States.
