BP is a British multinational oil and gas company headquartered in London, one of the industry's so-called supermajors and a vertically integrated operator across exploration, refining, distribution and power generation. It traces its origins to the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, founded in 1909 to develop oil discoveries in Iran, later renamed Anglo-Iranian Oil Company and then British Petroleum; the British government privatized it in stages between 1979 and 1987, and it adopted the shortened name BP p.l.c. in 2001.
