Movie Theater Industry

The movie theater industry runs the businesses, called movie theaters or cinemas, that contain auditoriums where films and occasionally television programming are shown to a paying public. Since the 2010s most theaters have carried multiple screens, and the largest complexes, known as multiplexes or megaplexes, a format developed in Canada in the 1950s, can carry as many as thirty screens. The industry has faced real revenue pressure: in Canada total operating revenue was 1.7 billion dollars in 2012, and in the United States ticket sales fell nearly 11 percent between 2004 and 2013 even as box office revenue rose 17 percent on higher prices, with audiences increasingly choosing streaming services and home theater systems over a trip to the theater.
