Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia

Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia is a mobile network operator headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, that began as Global Partnership for Ethiopia BV before being awarded its telecommunications license on July 9, 2021 for a fee of 850 million US dollars, at the time the single largest foreign direct investment into Ethiopia. It is majority owned by the Kenyan operator Safaricom, which holds 55.70 percent, with Japan's Sumitomo Corporation holding 27.20 percent, British International Investment 10.90 percent, and South Africa's Vodacom 6.20 percent, and it is led by chief executive Wim Vanhelleputte. The company began telephony services in 2022 and offers mobile telephony, mobile money services including M-Pesa, Fuliza, and M-Shwari, e-commerce through Masoko, cloud computing and data services, music streaming, fibre connectivity, and DigiFarm agricultural services.
