Little, Brown and Company is an American publishing house founded in Boston in 1837 by Charles Coffin Little and James Brown. It has long published works by American authors, and its early lists included the poetry of Emily Dickinson and Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, a reference work that became a standard title. Since 2006 the firm has operated as a division of the Hachette Book Group rather than as an independent company. Its long history makes it one of the older surviving American trade publishers, and it shows how a nineteenth century Boston partnership became an imprint inside a larger international publishing group over the following century and a half.
