Brill Publishers

Communication Services

Brill Publishers, formally Koninklijke Brill NV, is a Dutch international academic publisher of books, journals and databases, founded in 1683 when the Leiden bookseller Jordaan Luchtmans began combining bookselling with publishing. It grew from that Leiden business, which stayed in the Luchtmans family until 1848, when ownership passed to the former employee E. J. Brill, whose name the firm has carried since. Brill became a public limited company in 1896 and remains headquartered in Leiden, with offices in Boston, Paderborn, Vienna, Singapore and Beijing. It is known for Oriental studies, classics, religious studies, Jewish and Islamic studies, Asian studies, international law and human rights, and has expanded into ebooks and online primary source collections. Its imprints include Brill-Nijhoff and Brill-Rodopi, and in 2024 its operations were combined with those of the German publisher De Gruyter to form De Gruyter Brill.
