Essanay Studios was an early American motion picture studio founded on 10 August 1907 by George Kirke Spoor and Gilbert M. Anderson. It began as the Peerless Film Manufacturing Company before taking the name Essanay, formed by phoneticizing the initials of its founders, S and A. The studio was based in Chicago, Illinois, first at 501 Wells Street and from 1908 at 1333-45 West Argyle Street in the Uptown neighborhood. It became defunct in 1918 after ceasing to issue films that fall.
