Columbia Pictures is an American film studio headquartered in Culver City, California, founded in 1918 by brothers Harry Cohn and Jack Cohn together with Joe Brandt as the CBC Film Sales Corporation, renamed Columbia Pictures in 1924 once Harry Cohn took full creative control as studio head. It grew from a minor "Poverty Row" operation into one of Hollywood's major studios under Cohn's decades-long leadership, and Sony acquired it in 1989 to form the core of Sony Pictures Entertainment. Its catalog spans Frank Capra's 1930s comedies and dramas through the Spider-Man, Men in Black and Ghostbusters franchises, and it remains one of the industry's most prolific working studios.
