Urban One is an American media conglomerate and publicly traded company founded in 1980 by Cathy Hughes, who launched the business by purchasing Washington, D.C. radio station WOL for 995,000 dollars. Headquartered at 1010 Wayne Avenue in Silver Spring, Maryland, the company operates in broadcasting and media and is the largest African American owned broadcasting company in the United States, running more than 50 radio stations. It trades on Nasdaq under the ticker symbols UONE and UONEK, with Cathy Hughes serving as chairman and Alfred C. Liggins III as president and chief executive.
