The Los Angeles Lakers are an American professional basketball franchise based in Los Angeles that competes in the National Basketball Association. The franchise began in 1946 as the Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League, was sold and moved to Minneapolis as the Minneapolis Lakers, and relocated to Los Angeles before the 1960-61 season when owner Bob Short decided to move it. The Lakers share their home arena with the Los Angeles Sparks and the Los Angeles Kings and have won 17 championships, second to the Boston Celtics. Jeanie Buss has been the controlling owner since 2013 and runs the team on behalf of her family, whose trusts hold a 66 percent controlling stake as of 2024, alongside minority owners including Mark Walter.
