Amblin Entertainment, formerly Amblin Productions, is an American film production company founded by the filmmaker Steven Spielberg in 1975, with Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall joining as partners in 1980. Its offices are in Bungalow 477 on the Universal Studios backlot in Universal City, California, with a second office in New York City, and it distributes its films under the Amblin Entertainment banner. The name comes from Spielberg 1968 short film Amblin. The company produced I Wanna Hold Your Hand in 1978, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in 1982, and through the 1980s Gremlins, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and the Back to the Future trilogy. It formed a television division in 1984, ran a partnership with Don Bluth from 1985, and then set up its own London animation unit, Amblimation, which closed in 1997 when staff moved to DreamWorks Animation. Universal distributes many Amblin productions although the company is independent.
