Kyoto Animation Co., Ltd., often shortened to KyoAni, is a Japanese animation studio and light novel publisher located in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture. Husband and wife Hideaki Hatta and Yoko Hatta founded it in 1981 together with a number of former Mushi Production staff, although the present company dates to July 12, 1985. Hideaki Hatta served as president until his death in 2026, and Yoko Hatta remains vice president. The studio has produced a long list of anime series and films, including The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Clannad, K-On!, Nichijou, Love, Chunibyo and Other Delusions, Free!, Sound! Euphonium, A Silent Voice, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid and Violet Evergarden. Besides animation it publishes print media, mainly light novels.
