RKO Pictures, originally Radio-Keith-Orpheum, is an American film studio formed in 1928 when the Radio Corporation of America, under David Sarnoff, merged the Keith-Albee-Orpheum theater chain with the Film Booking Offices of America, a production company backed by financier Joseph P. Kennedy. It ranked among the "Big Five" major studios of Hollywood's golden age, producing King Kong in 1933, the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers musicals of the 1930s, and Orson Welles's Citizen Kane in 1941. RKO effectively ceased major studio production by the late 1950s under Howard Hughes's turbulent ownership, and its name and remaining library rights have passed through several owners since, with RKO Pictures LLC holding them today.
