Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. is a Japanese video game publisher and entertainment conglomerate headquartered in Tokyo, formed in 2003 through the merger of Square, developer of the Final Fantasy series, and Enix, publisher of the Dragon Quest series. Beyond its two flagship role-playing game franchises the company publishes Kingdom Hearts and numerous other series, and it also operates in merchandise, arcade facilities and manga publishing under its Gangan Comics imprint. Square Enix's role-playing games, and those of its predecessor companies, have been especially influential in shaping the genre both in Japan and internationally since the 1980s.
