Antara is Indonesia's national news agency, headquartered in Central Jakarta and founded on December 13, 1937 in Batavia during the Dutch colonial period by independence activists dissatisfied with Dutch-controlled news coverage. Now a state-owned enterprise operating under Indonesia's Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises, it is the country's sole authorized distributor of foreign news agency material and played a central role in broadcasting Indonesia's 1945 declaration of independence.
