The food processing industry transforms agricultural products into food, or one form of food into another, ranging from simple activities such as grinding grain to the complex industrial methods used to make convenience foods. Its output is generally grouped into primary processing, which makes agricultural products edible, secondary processing, which creates familiar foods such as bread, and tertiary processing, which produces ready to eat, ultra processed foods, a category that has drawn criticism for promoting obesity and overnutrition through excessive sugar and salt content. The industry is also credited with reducing food waste, improving preservation, lowering agriculture environmental impact and improving food security.
