O3b Networks

O3b Networks Ltd was a satellite communications company founded by Greg Wyler in 2007 to supply voice and data connectivity to mobile operators and internet service providers in emerging markets. Its name, short for Other 3 Billion, referred to the global population without broadband access, and it operated a medium Earth orbit constellation of twenty Ka-band satellites flying far closer to Earth than traditional geostationary satellites, cutting latency. SES acquired full ownership of the company in 2016 and folded it into SES Networks, and the O3b satellites still operate today alongside the newer O3b mPOWER constellation launched from 2022.
