Francis Joseph Aguilar (1932-2013) was an American scholar of strategic planning and general management who joined the faculty of Harvard Business School in 1964 and became a tenured professor there in 1971. He developed the PEST analysis framework for scanning the political, economic, social and technological factors in a companys external environment, setting it out in his 1967 book Scanning the Business Environment, and he also wrote European Problems in General Management and General Managers in Action while consulting for a number of firms.
