Xerox

Information Technology

Xerox is an American corporation that sells printers, digital document products and related services in more than 160 countries, headquartered in Norwalk, Connecticut with a large historic base of employees around Rochester, New York, where the company was founded. It pioneered the photocopier market with the 1959 introduction of the Xerox 914, so influential that xerox became a common synonym for photocopying, and researchers at its Palo Alto Research Center invented key elements of personal computing, including the desktop graphical user interface and the computer mouse, later adopted by Apple and Microsoft.

FAQs

Why was Xerox once called the Haloid Company?

It began as a photography-paper business named Haloid, and became Xerox Corporation in 1961 after its copier success.

Xerox began in 1906 as the Haloid Company, founded in Rochester, New York, as a photography-paper business. The name changed in steps as the company moved into copying: it became Haloid Xerox Inc. in 1958, and after the Xerox 914, the first automatic plain-paper copier, proved a huge success in 1960, it was renamed Xerox Corporation in 1961 and listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
